Despeckle is definitely doing something. All the time. I use the fixed version of the script, but descreen can't be turned off. It doesn't get displayed right away, but as soon as you save the image, go back and forth in the edit timeline or continue working on it things get blurry. With high res images it doesn't matter much, but lower res images really suffer.

I tried out the free demo version of the descreen.net plugin for Photoshop yesterday. Consider my mind blown. It really does an amazing job with no effort for the user at all. Screen patterns and moire are reduced really well while it manages to avoid all the nasty artifacts that can happen.

The results I get using automatic mode are better than what I can achieve using the Gimp plugins - spending a fraction of the time. Photoshop users should definitely give it a try. The free demo works for images up to 2000x2000px. Think I'm gonna buy the home version..
