Problem with movie posters
Problem with movie posters
My problem with the poster section the way it is now is that some users more often than not upload character posters with and without a logo to the Poster section. This to me is wrong as the posters should represent the movie and not just a character of the movie. Anyone agrees?

Re: Problem with movie posters
Personally agree. I don't know if there's really a problem with the posters being made the way u say more than before, cos my Artwork Downloader is set to download almost all but posters by now, but in my case
I google for the originals only (usually there's not just one) , and if it's not possible to get a good source, i try to reproduce them. I mean, being a character poster or not, if it's one of the "real" ones, that's the one i want.

Re: Problem with movie posters
Well personally I agree as well, but we made huge progress in limiting what types of "Character Posters" are allowed. I really don't think this is a huge issue now, but the best way to fix this is to use your right to vote! Then you have a say in what is downloaded by default.

Re: Problem with movie posters
I have to cast my vote in with Tobby here. Re-scraping my movie collection at the moment, it's ridiculous how many movies have NOTHING but blank character posters. Whenever I see it I toss my own artwork in. But the artwork for the movies is usually perfectly fine. They're just all missing titles. Can't we make a rule that states that posters with a language on 'None' can't be uploaded before at least one poster of with an actual language?
Re: Problem with movie posters
I really don't think that is a realistic solution. The people that don't use logo posters shouldn't be made to make one just so they can upload the one they prefer to use. The whole idea of setting the language to none for textless posters, is so that the api could distinguish them, therefore you could set preferred language, or none. (hopefully with proper fallback support)blok2004 wrote:I have to cast my vote in with Tobby here. I would suggest trying to get support for this feature from the mediacenter/skin/plugin you use.

Re: Problem with movie posters
Yeah I should clarify that I do manual scraping, not automatic haha. Trying to get all my movies outfitted with high-res images cause TMDB isn't cutting it compared to Fanart.tv these days. But regardless. Looking at a film like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe . Which had 7 posters all of which were blank until I uploaded my own... I don't really know what the solution is. I'm sure there's a market for blank posters, or blank character posters. But the amount of blank/character posters we have for movies currently is a bit ridiculous especially since (at this point at least) skins don't rotate posters.
Just tossing in my own opinion. Not a life altering problem by any means. Just something causing some mild frustration.

Re: Problem with movie posters
I suppose it's a matter of taste - If your mediacentre of choice displays a logo for your movie at the same time as the poster then I would advocate that the majority wouldn't want a logo on their poster - this is also true of the opposite - if it doesn't show a logo then a poster WITH a logo would be choice.
If you add in the factor of a cdart being displayed at the same time you could be in logo heaven OR hell.
At the end of the day its down to choice - the uploaders don't have to put text on the posters, neither do the downloaders have to have that image in their own mediacentre.
Character posters I'm not a fan of but that's my opinion - a stark character on a black background doesn't cut it for me - you need to have AT least some form of background - short and sweet - discuss !
I'm not swung either way about textless posters - I think if more than just uploaders are chewing the cud it would give a better representation of an overall answer (of course regular uploaders know how to place a logo on a blank poster so doesn't pose a problem) - but the average Joe ? Any thoughts ?
Personally I dont do automatic scraping EVER - all my movie artwork has been previously downloaded or made and is kept local so my opinion doesn't really matter - but again, the average Joe doesn't spend the time that we do on artwork - they want to see images of any movie they throw at their mediacentre and if it is a bunch of textless posters then so be it (remember the poster section although very popular, personally is still in its infancy - I'm sure more non textless posters will turn up over time) - Always the optimist

Re: Problem with movie posters
Couldn't have said it better myself leepenny.
The truth is... that the bulk of the artwork downloaded from the site is via the API and thus our biggest audience. I'd love to see stats on how many people actually search for better images through their mediacenters vs. just keeping the default that is picked for them. I'd hazard a guess it isn't a huge difference. Either way, AFAIK there isn't anybody that is supporting fanart.tv posters other than bakslash's program, and you still can't browse the artwork in that. (don't think he put a language option in it yet.)
Point is that we really need to get a push formulated to not only support fanart.tv posters, but to support the language tags as well in the most used API's. The amount of people willing to take the time to choose and download each piece of art for their collection is always going to be a small few. So the best plan is to narrow the selection via the API to get better results. This again goes back to voting, which is why I've been pushing so hard to make it easier. But this would give a user far better results. Especially a new user who is setting up a mediacenter for the first time.
Although an annoyance, I could never see "requiring" someone to upload a logo poster first before being allowed to upload their chosen format. When I moderate and notice new posters coming through, I've been known to ask the artist for a logo or an English version of artwork and the artist is usually happy to do so. If not, then the best way is to make it yourself of course.

Re: Problem with movie posters
Yeah I'm fine with the textless posters. I totally see the point of them. I'm just talking about the number of them, If you look at The Hunger Games, or The Avengers, or the like, there's a shocking amount of posters that are up there for completions sake. Avengers needs to have ALL the character posters. The Hunger Games has posters of ALL the districts. To me it just feels... Lazy? Like its giving the illusion of selection. I love having the option of choosing between two posters, one with text, and one without. But at the moment the aforementioned movies just seem cluttered. I'd much rather see a user put a lot of thought and effort into one or two posters. Instead of bulk uploading 10 that don't really differ much from each other. Unless they can make a case for why they should be there.
Re: Problem with movie posters
hehe - at the tmdb (over 150 posters for avengers, over 150 posters for hunger games).........LOL - It could be worse.
