Non-square album art

What do we do with artwork that isn't square (commonly digipaks/singles)?

I know the rules state "Images must be in jpg format sized 1000x1000 pixels, no exceptions."
Normally I would just crop the artwork though that isn't always a possibility (text or important images getting cut off) or maybe pad the top and bottom with a solid colour if the particular cover allows. I won't change the aspect ratio because that's uncool though I have seen some of that on this site possibly due to the 1000x1000 rule.

What's the solution if the above isn't suitable?

I always crop the image in such a case.
If this is not possible I crop as much as I can and then fill the remaining parts using clone/healing brush or context-aware fill.
