Cover for an album multi artists

Post by enzo94 »

Hello,

If the subject is not in the good forum's section, just indicate me the good one and I will deplace it.

When an album was recorded by several artist (multi artist album), the cover (and therefore the album) just appear in the first artist fanart.tv page.
With an example, it's better to understand :
- Album : Velloso, Bethania, Gil (https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/2 ... 7ff4d27775)
- Artists : Caetano Veloso (https://musicbrainz.org/artist/f07dbc2f ... 1b0eb6faf1), Maria Bethânia (https://musicbrainz.org/artist/b3998c06 ... b83572ae7b) and Gilberto Gil (https://musicbrainz.org/artist/cf6b70f6 ... 63cabfc974)

Artist fanart.tv pages :
- Caetano Veloso : https://fanart.tv/artist/f07dbc2f-317b- ... o-caetano/
- Maria Bethânia : https://fanart.tv/artist/b3998c06-04e6- ... nia-maria/
- Gilberto Gil : https://fanart.tv/artist/cf6b70f6-2616- ... -gilberto/

Album fanart.tv cover (I upload it) : https://fanart.tv/fanart/music/f07dbc2f ... 5310c1.jpg

As you can see the cover only appear on the Caetano Veloso fanart.tv page (first artist in alphabetic order) and not on the fanart.tv pages of the 2 others artists, while this album is multi artist album as indicated on the album's music brainz page.

To tell the whole story, I first tried to upload the cover from Gilberto Gil's page because I was working on this artist. As I didn't see the album in the list, I tried to add it with the release group's MBID and it was impossible. When I saw in the music brainz release group page that the first artist was Caetano Veloso, I tried to upload the cover from his page and it work great. After moderation of the cover, I come back to the Gilberto Gil's page to see if the cover was present and I didn't see it.

It also means if I tag this album with only "album artist" = "Gilberto Gil", fanart.tv will not provide the cover, while the cover is available in the site.

I would like to know if it's possible to, in case of a multi artist album :
- Add the album to all the artists who participated in the recording, from any of these artist's fanart.tv pages ?
- Add a cover for this album from any of these artist's fanart.tv pages ?

Thanks for your answer

Hi buddy,

I've seen your question and it's a really good one. I haven't answered you yet, because I need some time to think this through ;) Immediately I think that it should always be the first artist the album should be added to. For example if you have a album by Rihanna & Shakira, the album should be added on Rihanna. This is my first thought about it, but I'll keep thinking and do some research :P

Be patient with me! :P

Hello zorensen,

Thanks for your answer.

I personnaly think the album should be added to all artists. Fanart tv chose to use music brainz like the reference for the music, as TMDB and TVDB are the reference for the movies and the tv shows. It’s a very good decision because this web site is very complete about the music.

In my example, as music brainz indicate, this album is an album of the 3 artists. If you check on others music web sites like allmusic, discogs or the audiodb, you will see that this album is associated to the 3 artists :
- Allmusic : http://www.allmusic.com/album/caetano-v ... 0000966237
- Discogs : http://www.discogs.com/Caetano-Veloso-M ... ter/427055
- Theaudiodb :
-> Caetano Veloso page : http://www.theaudiodb.com/album/2133043
-> Maria Bethânia page : http://www.theaudiodb.com/album/2207783
-> Gilberto Gil page : http://www.theaudiodb.com/album/2165890

If we say that this album is only an album of one of these artists, we will have to choose the artist and this choice will be too much arbitrary. The reality is that this album is a multi artist album and not an one artist album.

The reality is one thing, after we have to see the point of view of each mediacenter. Mine is XBMC with Aeon Nox skin, so I’m only able to talk about this one. I don’t know the others one. When I scrap an artist (I use Universal Music scrapers), I retrieve the full discography of the artist from Music Brainz. In my music center I have both of these three artists (Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil). Today I only able to see the fanart tv cover of this album from the discography of Caetano Veloso and not from the discography of Gilberto Gil.

I'm aware that make it possible to associate an album to several artists can have some big impacts for fanart tv database and website :
- Maybe there is some impact on data model if this one is only able to associate an album to one and only one artist,
- It’s also necessary to modificate the functionality « Add an album » in order to associate an album to several artists,
- Maybe you also have to check the way you count the cover album in order not to count many times the same cover,
- And surely many others impacts

From my point of view, the biggest impact is how to re associate to all artists the existing multi artist albums that were associated to one artist in fanart tv database. This is representing a lot of jobs. Maybe it’s possible to have a robot that retrieve this information from Music Brainz API but it will represent a lot of requests, maybe too much for the Music Brainz administrators.

If fanart tv administrators say it represents too much job and there are others priority about the website development and the database, it’s the reality of the website life and I understand.

But if administrators say that an album can only be associated to one and only one artist and there is no way to associate it to several artists in fanart tv, I think you’re wrong because the reality is not this one and the mediacenters manage album with several artists

Now I will be patient and I’m not hurry :D

Sorry for my english. It’s not very good and there is no attack in my words. I just want to present you my point of view, so you can move forward in your thinking.

This is certainly a question for Kode, Mordred, and Zorensen.
Hopefully they will chime in soon.
