Collection Logos

Hi to All,

I have made quite a few (200+) Collection (boxset) logos based off the HD Clear logos currently on the site. Thanks to the original authors

A couple of days back Kode posted in the Mediabrowser forum and suggested I post a few here before submitting to the site for uploading to get a few pointers as to what needs to be fixed or corrected to pass the guidelines that you have made.

So here goes:

Image Image

I have posted just a couple as I don't want to clutter the post but you can have a look at the full list at my Dropbox gallery.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpigwb0/h_gGyBiuyX

A lot of the older ones would need to be redone if needed at all.

Some feedback would be appreciated as to if they comply or what needs to be done to comply with the rules. Also what is a good number to batch upload as I don't want to upload a truck load at once.

BTW,great site and a great resource for all of us in the media world.Well done to all involved.

Cheers
Yogi

Can one of the mods comment on this please (and any of our regular contributor)? I asked him to post here first before uploading the collection.

I'll let a "proper" mod comment on the 2 you have posted yogi, but I've had a quick look at your dropbox, there are some that would definitely be denied, but probably a fair few, if not the majority - I only looked at a small sample - that would be approved (it's hard to say when seeing them only on a black background, when they are uploaded we test them of 4 different colour backgrounds).

I will highlight a few definite denials to give you an idea:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... Family.png - collection is pretty unreadable on a black background

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... -Alien.png - couple of things wrong with this, it looks like it has been upscaled from a smaller image? and is very blurred, also the outer glow on the top of the I is cropped.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... Heaven.png - Again, looks like the logo has been upscaled, so while the "collection" looks nice and crisp the logo is blurry (the font looks pretty close though, if it was me personally id have recreated the whole logo using the font).

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... %20Pie.png - as above really

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... lantis.png - looks like there are some smudges on a dark background that arent supposed to be there.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... Powers.png - blurry

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... mi%201.png - blurry

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... Future.png - bottom of the c looks weird/cropped and might be worth trying to skew the text so it fits in closer to the look of the logo

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... l-Bond.png - invisible on black background

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... Chucky.png - blurry

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... e%20Me.png - "collection" is too jagged, there are smudges, and iirc the 2 characters on either side should be removed

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf0uvizkdpig ... 0Harry.png - collection looks blurry

This is just a quick list of some obvious issues I found, some of the images looked fantastic from what I could see, hopefully someone else will be able to give you some tips as I'm not the best person to give advice on improving an image, I'll leave that to the pros.

Hi Yogi, and welcome. :)
I am glad you are considering contributing and I'll try to help as much as possible.

I looked through a good sampling from your link and I think you have some great offerings! Some look ready to go but others are going to need some tweaking to comply.
The big keys to look for are the following:
Size, Alignment, Edges, Cropping, and that they look good on any color background.

Most look like they can be easily adjusted and shouldn't take much work at all to be great additions to our library. The biggest advice I can give it to have a look at the first link in my sig. The links at the bottom of the first post should be very helpful. Unfortunately the link with the picture examples is outdated and deals with SD logos, but the fundamentals presented there hold true on all clear artwork. Just ignore statements about alignment and size.
The video link however is current and shows how we check artwork so you can see what we will be looking for.

Lastly, make sure to really familiarize with the logo rules.

HD Movie Logos (hdmovielogo)
Movie Logos are images of a movie logo/name with a transparent background
Can be used while browsing your media center library as a recognizable navigation item
  • Image Size 800 x 310px
  • Centered aligned both vertically and horizontally
  • 10px gutter, this means the actual image is a maximum of 780px by 290px and any dropshadow/outerglow can go into the gutter, but the image may not
  • Try to fill as much width/height as possible
  • logos need to be visible on all kinds of backgrounds
  • Try to go with the lighter color version of a logo since 90% of skins are dark
  • Logo should be authentic to the original logo where possible
  • No taglines, actor, director or studio. Just the title of the movie
The only way to prevent denials is to scrutinize each image before uploading as we will do when we moderate it.

As far as how many to upload at once, I would suggest starting with 3-4 just to make sure we are all on the same page. If all goes well I would still recommend keeping the number limited to no more than 10 at a time. Wait for them to be moderated and do it again. This will help the moderators keep their sanity intact. :D

I hope I haven't scared you off at all. Just trying to prevent what happens all to often. Someone uploads a stockpile of images all at once without really checking them against our rules. When they all get denied it can be a slap in the face, and it's no fun for the moderator either. I'll keep an eye out for your work and am really looking foreword to you joining our community! :)

Cheers

P.S. Have a look at the other links in my sig as well if you aren't overly familiar with the site.

Hey Yogi, I'll comment on the 2 logos you posted here. On the 1st one, the word collection is great but what's above is not. It is too blurry and seems to have been stretched.
On the 2nd one, it's good but it's too small. Check out the video tutorial I made to properly size your logos. http://forum.fanart.tv/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=42
Looking quickly thru your images in dropbox I see that you could have used the existing logos from our database and added the word Collection/Trilogy/etc. You have quite a few images that are inferior to what we have here. Use them :)

That's a shame Yogi, you had the makings of a valued contributor, but I totally understand not having the time to invest.

I'm sad to hear it Yogi.
Looks like I scared you off after all. I was just trying to save you what I went through myself once. (Yes I speak from experience)
I probably would have just quit submitting if if wasn't for a certain mod who shall remain nameless. (Jack Tyler) :D

Anyway, long story short... I decided to take his pointers and kept at it, and it's become very rewarding. I love to increase my skill and learn how to do new things. I personally don't know any graphic artists on the site, just people who love to do it and keep at it because it's fun. If there is any way I can ever be of help, just ask. I work in gimp myself, but there are plenty of Photoshop users on the site that would be willing to help anyone willing to learn. If you use gimp, even better! We get more tutorials up as we can, and are happy to take requests on stuff not already covered.

So I hope you will think on it a bit.
You can contact me anytime or even join us on the irc chat if you like.

Cheers

Thanks again guys,

I haven't been scared off and I will revisit this project of mine some time in the future again (don't know when,I have stopped doing them period) and will definitely clean up my images so I can at least make a submission to this great site.
I will still be looking, learning and lurking to broaden my use of photoshop

Cheers
Yogi
