CDArt help

Post by mediacentral »

Looking for some help on placement of, as well as what flags to use for a disc image.

I'm almost finished, however I felt like it looked too plain.

So, I added a studio, dvd, region, and rating 'flag', but now I feel like they don't fit properly. It looks like I just slapped them in there (which I kinda did)

Any advice/input on arrangement and/or inclusion of any extra items, or comments/critiques on the image itself, would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully leepenny will see this and chime in, being our in house CDArt expert.
I don't think it looks terrible, but indeed it could use that "something else". My only advice is trying to find some other element if the movie to add to the big open space.

Cheers

Also, even if not an obligation, i personally find that adding the copyright curve text along the edge of the disk, gives it a nice "real" touch.
But agree leepenny has lot more experience on this.

Okie dokie - placement of the flags first - it depends on the image itself - usually I try to align them centrally to the left or right of the inner ring - obviously placement of flags isnt a rule but I just find that its more pleasing to the eye if you find a space that has little going on in the background as well - I could go into great detail about what looks pleasing but its subjective - the larger flags should be in the centre , either towards the bottom or centrally to the left or right - the smaller logos can be distributed along the same level as the flag on the bottom ( again personal preference) There are no hard fast rules but keeping central alignment for flags to each other also looks pleasing to the eye - have a look at ACTUAL cd art scans to see how studios do it - you can have lots of flags if you wish - (I keep mine minimal cos thats the kinda guy I am LOL) - I also check this site to find studio and audio flags are correct
http://www.blu-ray.com/
When you see an original cdart you will see multiple flags for distributors, companies, studios, regions, general warnings and copyrights, the list could go on, but as I only do custom jobs I want it to be about the artwork so for me studio/distributor and audio flag and dvd/bluray flag suffices
The copyright curve does add a more realistic touch for sure - if you can do it it would be a nice addition - I agree that cdart should be more than a background image with a logo on it - which is great to hear that you are actually thinking about more than just the image but also the aesthetics (+1) - I am constantly reworking images for discs to see what works and what doesnt - look at my discs - you see some fine discs with no votes - reason - layout usually - not because its a duff film - it has the downloads but no votes to me thats shouts 'meh' - quality is there layout was all wrong :)
To sum up (I can drone on can't I) - there is nothing wrong with the disc here BUT if you move universal flag central vertically and central from disc edge and edge of centre hole - move dvd flag centrally where it is and distribute other flags around the studio flag keeping central alignment - with added copyright text around edge it should be golden
Have a look here for some inspiration http://www.customaniacs.org/forum/

Akovia & Vic - Thanks for your replies.

Leepenny - Thanks for your detailed response. Couple questions back for you:

For the copyright arc, do you use a particular font? Or do you have any recommendations for fonts?

Do you have any sources for flags (rating, audio, studio, region)? I've pilfered a bunch from Ember Media Manager, and typically just search google if there's one I don't have, but every once in a while I run into one I can't seem to locate. For example, the PG-13 one on this disc seems like the aspect ratio is off.

usually for the copyright arc it needs to be a font that isnt too bold or fancy - sure give away for a custom artwork is that bold font around edge - something like arial regular (although squishing it a bit vertically to make the letters more 'square' seems to give a good representation of an original)
Hmm flags - Usually searching for a studio logo go for wikipedia, usually have .png's - or find studio logo in monochrome (although you can desaturate a colored logo and adjust levels to suit) in super large size and cut it out
You can also find all flags transparent in xbmc skins - for example aeon nox
https://github.com/BigNoid/Aeon-Nox/tre ... edia/flags - just becareful they are all OK - ((not the largest but maybe passable)
I'll give you some links

all these were just quick searches - all logos are vector so can be any size you wish

http://code.google.com/p/shade-xbmc/dow ... r&can=4&q=
some more studio flags :)
BTW keep of all your logos - you never know when you need them ! - I have all mine in a folder on my template ready to go - also have less popular ones on my server
I scour the net for brushes and textures and have them in folders on my server - this is where true customization comes into play - trying to make a disc different-ish from the others is quite taxing - also if you notice on my discs, where I can I try to have the logo slightly obscured by a character, this adds a bit more reality/depth to a disc so its not so stuck on - also add some form of lighting afterwards then fake'grain' to consolidate all layers before adding flags - but now we are in the realms of leepenny secret magic so i'll stop there LOL

Awesome, thanks a lot.

I always save damn near everything I find or make (~24tb server helps with that). I never even thought of digging thru xbmc skins for flags, good tip.
