"People" section??

Post by HTPC »

Hello all,
I wondered if it's possible to have a "people" category?
themoviedb has a people section so could we link to that database?

I'd welcome your views on this.... I'm not artistic or an expert with image editing software so would be interested in hearing what the contributors to this site think. Is it something you would like to do?

As an example, I've created a "David Attenborough" section in my Emby library. Obviously all the series inside that library are already covered on this site but it would be nice to have a David Attenborough background, poster, logo, etc for the root directory.

Please let me know what you think, whether positive or negative...all opinions welcome.

As I am not a member of the team fanart tv, all I 'll say here is only my opinion.

This section already exist for me, this is the music section as an artist can be a « people ». The main difference is that an artist is identified by an MBID and a people is identified by a Imdb ID or a TMDB ID.

In order to create a people, fanart will use an external ID. In case the Imdb ID ou TMDB ID is used, fanart tv must check if the people doesn’t exist yet in the database as an artist. As the name of people/artist is not always the same between these different databases (IMDB, TMDB and Music Brainz), it will be a little bit complicated not to have duplicated people in the database.

The only database I know that can be used to solve this problem is the wikidata database. In this database, a people have a wikidata ID and this database managed the IMDB ID and the MBID of a people.

With an example, it will be easier to understand, the people is Charles Aznavour :
- Artist Fanart tv page : https://fanart.tv/artist/5f264b87-d5f6- ... r-charles/
- Music Brainz page : https://musicbrainz.org/artist/5f264b87 ... 4c5f0c6fc9
- IMDB page : http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002198/
- TMD page : https://www.themoviedb.org/person/10268 ... s-aznavour
- Wikidata page : https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1785

The Wikidata ID for this people is « Q1785 » and as you can see in the wikidata page, there is the MBID and IMDB ID of this people, so good way to solve the duplication problem. Now I don’t know if Wikidata have any API that retrieve these informations. There is also other ID managed by Wikidata as VIAF Identifier.

About the TMDB database, there is not a lot of duplicated movies but for the people this is not same quality. I have made some edition (more than 13 000) on this database since 2 years and there is some duplicated people. For my point of view TMDB is not an excellent database for the people, I prefer IMDB.

It is also possible to have a section « People » different from the artist section, but I think it is stupid not to benefit all the arts that were made on the music section.

I use Kodi as mediacenter and the actor view have only one image for an actor, the thumb. I’m not sure that it’s possible to manage more image on Kodi for an actor. For my point of view, a media center is more dedicated to navigate on is movie/tv show/music library and select a media to view than navigate on actor/studio library. The first purpose of Kodi is to view movie/tv show or listen music easily not to have a montain of informations and images about movie, tv show or music.

I hope you understand what I wrote because my english is not great.

Best regards

Interesting approach :).

But I honestly do not think that there is a greater demand (execept for you ;)) for this kind of section. Also in point of the relation technical implementation effort vs demand.
I agree with enzo94 that the main focus of media centers is for movies/music/tvshows, not people. For me it is sufficient to have the actors listed in the movie information (I am using Kodi). Besides the given example (documentaries narrated by David Attenborough) I cannot quickly think of another example where a people view would be useful for me :|.
